How can I add more resources to my DV Managed server?
Scale your DV Managed server with the touch of a button, without any complicated migrations. Automated, 24/7/365 upgrades are just a few clicks away in your AccountCenter, with most upgrades occurring instantly with no downtime. Need to scale to a monster, single-tenant box? Go big with DV Enterprise!
AccountCenter offers these options 24/7.You can up-scale DV Managed to the next resource level at any time. Add-on services such as Snapshot Backups, additional IP addresses, or the Plesk license for unlimited domains, are also available.
How long does it take to up-scale to a bigger DV Managed service?
If you have a DV Managed of 4GB or smaller, the up-scale typically happens almost instantaneously. Up-scale to 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB can take a bit longer, as your IP address may change and DNS is involved. Either way, the process is automated and can be initiated via the AccountCenter, which makes it VERY easy to do. Likewise, down-scale is easy and instant.
How many websites can I host on a single DV Managed server?
Hundreds! The DV Managed server comes with a 100-domain license. You can easily upgrade to an unlimited license. Keep in mind that sufficient resources are also a factor. We've provided 6 levels of memory, storage, and bandwidth scalability that you can access with the click of a button: 1GB | 2GB | 4GB | 8GB | 16GB | 32GB. This way, as traffic to your sites increase, you can apply more resources to support them. Please see our product pages for pricing information.
How does DV Managed help me resell hosting services?
- The main Plesk Control Panel is designed for reselling.
- Easily create customer accounts and subscriptions.
- Set restrictions for your customers, as needed.
- Run private nameservers, if you wish.
- Brand the control panels with your logo.
- A control panel for your customers enforces access restrictions.

How does DV Managed help me monitor server condition?
Every DV Managed account comes with the Plesk Watchdog extension installed and enabled by default. Watchdog monitors your Plesk control panel services and the health of your DV Managed server. It ensures that your server is clean from malware, all services are up and running, and there is enough free disk space on the server. Watchdog scans your server for rootkits, backdoors, local exploits, and other malicious code, and it can be scheduled to run daily, weekly, or monthly. You can learn more about Watchdog on the Parallels Plesk Panel website.
Realtime and Historical Server Status information is also available via the AccountCenter or API 24/7/365 so you can monitor and manage the resource use of your server.
Will (mt) Media Temple bill my customers?
No. We respect your business, your brand, and your customers. We recommend that you install the Plesk Billing application. We've already paid the license fee, so it's free to install and use as long as your DV Managed server is active. This way, you have control of your billing and we can stay out of the way.
What guidance do you have available to help me get started reselling?
Many (mt) Media Temple customers resell hosting services, so the best place for advice is in the (mt) Forums. We encourage active contributions to the Forums so please, jump right in!
What are the benefits of virtualization?
Virtualization technology allows the resources of a single physical server to be efficiently divided into multiple, virtual servers each running their own operating system along with dedicated memory, processor, and storage resources. Virtualization isolates each DV environment so that any issue affecting one DV server will have no impact on neighboring DV servers. It enables us to offer multiple resource levels, so that you select and pay for only the amount that you need. Virtualization also makes it much easier for us to automatically up-scale or down-scale your resource package instantly when you click the button in the AccountCenter or access the scaling method of our API.
DV Managed servers provide dedicated processor cycles, dedicated memory, and dedicated storage. So you can choose the resources you need, share nothing and control it all. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers is the most efficient OS Virtualization technology available. You can also keep a close eye on your server's performance with real-time resource statistics including memory, cpu, and network utilization available inside your AccountCenter or from the (mt) API.
Why does (mt) Media Temple use Parallels' Virtuozzo virtualization?
We want your applications to run faster and better than anyone else's. Virtuozzo is a powerful, light-weight, high-performing virtualization system. It has a more efficient strategy for isolation that uses less server resources and does not significantly degrade performance as load on the machine rises. Other virtualization products have a severe loss of efficiency as load rises and some eventually grind to a halt before you even have a chance to use all of your guaranteed resources! Virtuozzo will out-perform them in a very dramatic way, especially during traffic spikes and high-load conditions, because it remains efficient all the way up to the cap on guaranteed resources. Also, there's a bonus with Virtuozzo: bursting. Bursting is a frequent event where memory beyond your guaranteed allocation is automatically used by your applications. Bursting is far more efficient than regular memory use, so your applications will respond to users much faster on Virtuozzo than on other virtualization systems. Turbo, anyone?
How is DV Managed different from shared hosting?
In a shared hosting environment, your websites constantly compete with hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of other customers' websites for the same limited pool of server resources. On a DV Managed server, your resources are isolated from everyone else on the server. You get additional ability to burst beyond your guaranteed resources. This design ensures you never have to worry about other customers impacting the performance of your web applications.
Shared hosting environments also limit your ability to customize server software and install new applications. With DV, you have access to the root level so you can customize existing applications and install new ones at anytime.
How is a DV Managed server different from a dedicated server?
A DV Managed server delivers performance comparable to a dedicated physical server, plus additional capabilities due to virtualization. The software Power Panel included with each DV allows you to stop, start, and reboot your server directly through your web browser. Using the optional Snapshot Backup add-on before performing delicate system administration tasks allows you to instantly revert back to your snapshot if your changes don't work out. The Power Panel also allows you to automatically re-provision your DV server to the exact state it originally came in at anytime. If you're a developer, you can access many of these features through our API also.
How is a DV Enterprise server different from a DV Managed server?
DV Enterprise refers to our top-of-the-line service. It has maximum guaranteed resource allocation and is configured exactly like the DV Managed server, except that it hosts only one customer. If you need a high-performance server with generous resource allocation and want to have it all to yourself, DV Enterprise is the solution for you.
How do I enable developer tools on DV Managed?
Some developer's tools, such as YUM, are pre-installed on DV Managed. Others can easily be enabled via the "admin" section of the AccountCenter. These are required in order to compile and develop applications using tools such as "make" and "gcc". For a complete listing of the tools installed, see this KnowledgeBase article.
Which versions of server software come pre-installed?
The following software is included on each DV Managed server:
- CentOS 6 x86_64
- Apache 2.2
- MySQL 5.5
- PHP 5.4
- Perl 5.10
- Python 2.6
- Ruby 1.8
- Postfix 2.8
- Plesk Panel 11
- YUM package management
What is the DV Managed standard package list?
The DV Managed server includes the latest stable releases of software pre-installed, giving you everything you need to get started. See our KnowledgeBase article for a complete list of installed packages.
What hardware is used on DV Managed?
There are no compromises here! Our DV Managed servers are powered by Hewlett-Packard Proliant DL-Series machines featuring multi-core Intel Xeon processors and high-performance SCSI/SAS disk drives in a RAID-10 configuration. These puppies are just plain fast!
How can I monitor my DV Managed server status?
Every DV Managed server includes our exclusive, real-time server status system, providing you with an instant view of your servers health. Monitor an auto-updating stream of your server's CPU, memory, disk, load and network usage directly from the AccountCenter.
Will (mt) Media Temple migrate my service?
Yes, our CloudTechs have a migration service, and it's available as an add-on to your (mt) account. With CloudTech migrations, our migration specialists can move your sites, domains, and applications to (mt) for you—it's fast, easy, and we do all the work. Other premium managed care services such as on-demand server tuning and on-call hosting support are also available. See our CloudTech page for more information and ordering instructions.
In addition, some articles published in our KnowledgeBase can help you make decisions before starting a migration, and for reference during and after. We also encourage you to consult with helpful and capable members of the community via the (mt) Forums.
Can I keep my IP addresses?
IP addresses are not elastic. A migration will require a change of IP addresses.
Will my service remain in the same data center?
If you purchase a DV Managed server via our website or the AccountCenter, it will be provisioned in our northern Virginia data center. This may or may not be the same location as your other (mt) services. If your DV server must operate in tandem (Load-balanced or HA) with one or more of your existing DV Managed or DV Developer services, please contact our Sales office.
How long does migration take?
This is difficult to predict, due to the number of factors involved. Each case will be different. Please see our KnowledgeBase article for a thorough exploration of this subject.
How much does it cost to migrate?
Most migration methods would involve the purchase of DV Managed service while your older DV service also remains open. During this "overlap" period, both services are billable. In the event that file transfer during the migration exceeds your bandwidth allocation, the standard overage rate of $0.15/GB would apply. As always, after the old service is closed, (mt) Media Temple will pro-rate the daily cost and automatically apply any resulting credit to your account.
What is new in DV Managed that might affect migration?
- Hardware: Because virtualization handles the hardware compatibility, you won't have to worry about hardware details - just know that you are getting premium high-performance hardware that we will maintain in peak operating condition.
- Network: We also manage networking for you. The only part you need to engage with is the new IP address(es) and DNS TTL settings to expedite the switch-over.
- Software: Note: The DV Managed is installed with a 64-bit version of CentOS 6. Also, newer versions of Apache, MySQL and PHP could require that your applications or configuration settings be updated.
How is DV Managed different from a DV Developer?
There are three essential feature differences:
- Disk Space: DV Managed has up to 50% more disk space.
- LAMP & Plesk: DV Managed includes LAMP and the Plesk Control Panel 11. The DV Developer server is a bare-bones server without a LAMP stack or a web-based control panel. Linux command-line skills are required to manage a DV Developer server.
- OS Choice: DV Managed is provisioned with CentOS. The DV Developer server offers the choice of Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora or CentOS operating systems.
Both services are powerful, reliable, high-performance servers. The differences revolve around OS choice, pre-installation of LAMP and Plesk, and storage allocation.
How is a DV Managed different from a DV Enterprtise?
DV Enterprise is identical to DV Managed except as follows:
- DV Enterprise is a single-tenant box. All resources on the box are allocated just to you.
- DV Enterprise is a 64GB service. Yup, it's big!
- DV Enterprise is our top-of-the-line DV Managed service, and anyone with a DV Managed can up-scale to 64GB DV Enterprise quickly and easily via the AccountCenter or via (mt) API.
See our Enterprise page for more details.
How is a DV Managed different from the (gs) Grid-Service?
- (gs) Grid-Service has a very-easy-to-use custom (mt) Media Temple control panel, rather than Plesk 11.0.
- (gs) Grid-Service does not have root access; DV Managed does.
- (gs) Grid-Service offers one resource-allocation package; DV Managed offers 6 scale-up levels.
- Generally speaking, DV Managed requires more administration experience, or willingness and time to learn; whereas the (gs) Grid-Service controls in the AccountCenter make the learning curve short.
- DV Managed allows you to run your own nameservers and the Plesk 11.0 panel offers a range of features suitable for small businesses and hosting resellers.
Contact our Sales Team who can help explain the differences in more detail and help you decide which solution is best for your needs.
